| The Map - Messages from the Edge | |||||
|
A map is a symbol for marking out known territory. A map gives us a sense of safety: it provides us with direction and boundaries so we don't feel lost and anxious. Armed with a map we can feel as though we are in control of our destinies, that we know where we're going. Explorers are people with the spirit of adventure in their hearts. They are people for whom the seduction of the unknown is stronger than the desire for security. Explorers chart unknown territory for us: they discover hidden capacities deep within themselves which help them tolerate uncertainty and find inner strength. Our intention is to provide short forays off the map to uncover hidden capacities and generate new ideas through creative collaboration. Marginalised communities are like boundary riders - they occupy the space between the hinterland of the explorer and the safety of civilization. From their location at the boundary, they are in a unique position to comment on the fabric of the interior. Like strangers in a strange land, they bring messages from the edge that are often insightful and more than usually profound. Off the Map is dedicated to traversing the spaces of the explorer, the boundary rider and the interior. |
